Harris County commissioner under fire for LGBTQ 'grooming' comments

Republican Harris County Commissioner Tom Ramsey is facing backlash for remarks aimed at members of the LGBTQ community made during a June 6 meeting with other county leaders.

As reported by ABC13's Nick Natario, Ramsey's remarks came during a discussion on the creation of a county LGBTQIA+ Commission for serving and assessing the needs of the LGBTQ community in Harris County. Ramsey, the Precinct 3 commissioner and lone Republican member of the Harris County Commissioners Court, was the only member of the body to vote against the proposed commission. In doing so, he accused members of the LGBTQ community of grooming children for sexual predation.

"I think there are some unresolved issues related to this community," Ramsey said. "They deal with the grooming of children."

Ramsey's comments were met with immediate pushback from Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

"I'm very proudly in favor of the [LGBTQ] community and believe that we should not bully any community," Hidalgo said.
