The America plan series: Part 3 "E"

Educate congregants on the Scriptural, historical and legal basis for Christian citizenship.

As discussed in the previous section, a critical element not only of action but effective and responsible action is well-grounded education. Our research and experience indicate that there are a number of topics and principles to cover in building a solid foundation of knowledge for Christians to be Biblical citizens. Those categories include:

  • Couldn’t this be using the pulpit for “politics?”
  • What about “Separation of Church and State?”
  • How do I know that I won’t jeopardize our church’s tax-exempt status?
  • Biblical Worldview- viewing all of life through the lens of Scripture
  • American Christian Heritage – the truth about the role of Christianity in our founding
  • God’s Design for Government – The Biblical and Constitutional purposes of government
  • Effective Community Impact – Practical and responsible involvement to impact our culture and government for Christ

In this section we will provide an overview of each category with key information and supporting resources for further study. We have drawn from a wide variety of credible scholars, historians, theologians, authors and pastors, and have tried to “boil it down” to make the most crucial information readily available. We presented the categories in a determined order for calculated reasons. We mentioned earlier that the “why” is first priority, and more specifically the “why” must be firmly grounded in Scripture for every citizen who professes a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” How we think determines how we act, and if our thoughts are not generated by a Biblical Worldview the result will be ungodly decisions.

Once we understand and incorporate Biblical principles into our decision making process, we must also know the role that Christians and the Bible have played in the development of western civilization, political and religious freedom and civil government. The great “Separation of Church and State” myth has created confusion and inaction and must be refuted by truth. In addition, we can still make poor decision in regard to electing leaders and legislation if we do not understand the legitimate function of government as defined by Scripture and proven by history. Finally, we do not want believers to be “dressed up with nowhere to go”. The Great Commission says to “Go!”, and each citizen will be responsible to apply what they have learned and must be fully equipped on a variety of options on how to do that.
