Tidewater Pastor Council stands for marriage

NORFOLK — Testing their political muscle, more than 50 clergy from an interracial mix of denominations gathered today to demand legislators’ support for a state constitutional amendment that would forbid same-sex marriage.

“We have got to lift our prophetic voices at this time and let the world know where we are as a faith community: We are supporting this amendment,” the Rev. G. Wesley Hardy of Cathedral of Faith Church of God in Christ in Chesapeake said at the news conference hosted by the Tidewater Pastor’s Council . The event was held at Garden of Prayer Temple on Church Street.

VIRGINIA BEACH - "Many conflicting and confusing ideas about marriage are promulgated today.  Yet, marriage as the relationship of one man and one woman has remained steadfast throughout millennia.  It is the foundation of civilized society, the most wholesome environment in which to raise children, the bedrock of stable communities, and an institution that encompasses all races, religions, and cultures.  It is not a civil rights issue, nor is it an institution whose meaning is determined solely by legislative bodies.  It is an institution that supercedes legislative bodies—an institution legislators and legislative bodies are obligated to protect..."
